The College of Life Sciences and Nano-technology located in Daedeok Valley campus (the second campus), Hannam University at the Daedeok Innopolis is a composite college with the purpose for greater industry-academia cooperation by linking complex research and venture businesses to provide study support for the students and consultation for the companies. Internships undertaken at these enterprises are core to this program and through technologically-intense and innovative projects, we aspire our graduates to aim to become future CEOs and experts in the field.
The College of Life Science and Nanotechnology has been designed to not only provide specialized educational programs, but to also conduct research in the fields of life science and nanotechnology. As a means of broadening students' expertise in the fields of biotechnology (BT) and nanotechnology (NT), the college will run programs in conjunction with related industries and research institutes. Staff and faculty at the Daedeok Valley campus will make consistent, all-out efforts to educate and motivate the students to become creative and devotional leaders in the society, particularly in the BT and NT areas.
Department of Biological Sciences and Biotechnology (established in 2015) This department was established in 2015 through the merger of the Biological Sciences and Biotechnology majors.
Department of Biological Sciences
Biological science is a comprehensive science that deals with the distribution, organization and life phenomena of creatures. It is one of the basic natural science disciplines and is closely related to applied subjects including medicine, pharmacy, raising stock, and food engineering. We research the distribution of and the correlations between organisms, using principles of substances between cells including DNA, the generation of organisms, and the production of useful proteins by using transformations of plants and microorganisms. In addressing the issue of our aging world, we guide our students who will lead this special era through the development of high value-added bio-drugs by cultivating plant tissues;, the development of new drugs, and physiological activation substances by using bulk production gene chips of human embryo liver cells, and substances that suppress aging. We also conduct bio-engineering studies to find useful proteins to develop gene therapies for incurable genetic diseases, with the application of gene tagging.
Department of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a field of applied biology that involves the use of living things in engineering, technology, medicine, and other useful applications. Biotechnology is famous for as it includes genetic engineering as well as cell- and tissue culture technologies. Bio-technology is a cutting-edge science that researches the phenomenon of organisms and utilizes their functions to provide an affluent life for mankind. We emphasize the areas of the basics as well as the application of biotechnology, teaching the theories, experiments, and practices of Biotechnology. Additionally, students will receive field training. We also nurture our students to become practitioners in specialized BT areas including drugs, food, bio-energy, environments, medical service industries, etc.
Department of Food and Nutrition
The food and nutrition science is an area of comprehensive life sciences that scientifically researches the correlation between diet as it relates to physical and mental health, growth, and development. We believe that by educating our students to become dieticians, nutritionists, health professionals, food science researchers, food processing engineers, health related public officers, food hygienists, food stylists, and chefs we can establish a nationwide awareness for a healthy diet. Quite a few of the graduates work as food related consumer consultants, which enable them to put the theories they have learned here into practice.
Department of Chemistry
In order to cultivate excellent professionals who can contribute toward contemporary sciences we educate our students to become innovative researchers, industrial technicians, teachers, and so forth through a combination of theories and field oriented experiments and practices. Since 2006, in particular, we have conducted studies on green technologies such as solar power, electronic materials, bio/nano fusion technologies, etc. We participate in the BK 21 (Brain Korea 21) project, designated by the Ministry of Education’s Science and Technology branch. Many graduates advance into diverse areas such as national/public/private research institutes, the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals, oil refineries, the petro-chemistry, the fiber industry, pulp and paper making industries, the fertilizer industry, the plastic industry, the rubber industry, the heavy chemical industry, and power industry.
Department of Mathematics
Mathematics is the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. Mathematicians seek out patterns, formulate new conjectures, and establish truth by rigorous deduction from appropriately chosen axioms and definitions. We run mathematical research courses, mathematics education, courses and applied mathematical courses for students' advancements into the areas of computers, information, and financing. Graduates advance into diverse areas such as secondary school teachers, insurance accountants, information protection, image compression engineers, computer programmers, research institutes, etc.
Department of Advanced Materials and Chemical Engineering (established in 2015). This department was established in 2015 through the merger of the Chemical Engineering and Advanced Materials majors.
Department of Chemical Engineering and Nano-Bio Technology
We educate scientific minds who will lead the chemical engineering industries focused on bioengineering, a core industry in the next generation of science as well as nano-engineering. In the areas of biotechnology, bio-industry-related education, and research including new bio-drugs and genetic technology in the area of nano-biotechnology; additionally, ultra-fine nano-material related to education and research is conducted with intense attention from the government and industries. Many graduates become distinguished professionals in the areas of bio industries (BT areas), electronics, semi-conductors and material industries (NT areas), the petrochemical industry, the oil refining industry, the environmental industry, and the power industry.
Department of Advanced Materials
In the 21st century, bio-technology (BT) and information technology (IT) are two major core fields that are developing. To educate competitive minds that can respond to this worldwide level of competition, we train students proficient in these two major core technologies. The entire curricula has been specialized to create talented professionals. Through department centered information/bio hybrid material research institutes, state-of-the-art education, and research is conducted. In addition, through exchange a program in connection with the Daedeok Research Complex, field oriented education is conducted so that students receive hands on training. Graduates advance into large domestic businesses (Samsung, LG Electronics, etc), pharmaceutical and medical service sectors, and related research institutes as researchers. Quite a number of graduates study abroad in the USA, Japan, and Germany. In science, the term natural science refers to a naturalistic approach to the study of the universe, which is understood as obeying rules or laws of natural origin. Hannam University offers fundamental theories of Natural Science and Technology. The college aims to develop resources which can contribute to human peace and prosperity. The Research Institute for Natural Science was founded in June 1996 to pursue active research in pure and applied sciences. The College offers a wide variety of seminars, laboratories, and practice facilities.
Department of Sports Science
We train professional physical education directors equipped with systematic and scientific knowledge of sports, physical exercises, leisure activities, recreation, and a high level of ability to teach practical skills. Many graduates have advanced as physical directors of various businesses and schools. Some of them also work as physical exercise prescription providers, leisure/event business staff, sport team coaches, or managers, and game referees.
Department of Nursing
The goal of Hannam University's Department of Nursing is to train future professionals to contribute to the development of Korea and humankind by exploring scientific truth and offering an examination of the relationship between humanity, health, nursing, and the environment based in the university's founding Christian spirit of truth, freedom, and service. Ultimate aims include providing training for specialized professions contributing to health promotion, disease prevention, and well-being for individuals, families, communities, and humankind in general through an understanding of science and technology and the therapeutic caregiving relationship with patients that is founded in a respect for humanity. Nurses are trained to be capable professionals as well as global leaders of both community and country.
